A-Level Grade Boundaries Explained
Grade boundaries are the numbers that decide your letter. Learn what they are, why they change every single session, and how to read a threshold table so you can check exactly where your marks fall.
What a grade boundary actually is
A grade boundary — Cambridge calls them grade thresholds — is the minimum mark you need for a given grade. If the A boundary on a paper is 62, then 62 earns an A and 61 earns a B. Every grade from A* down to E has its own threshold, and the space between two boundaries is that grade's band. Boundaries exist so that a mark can be translated fairly and consistently into a grade, no matter how the paper was set.
Why boundaries change every session
This is the part that surprises students most: the boundaries are not fixed. They are set fresh for each exam session — June, November and the March series — after all the scripts have been marked. Two forces drive the change:
- Paper difficulty. No two papers are identical. If this year's paper is harder, the boundaries drop; if it is easier, they rise.
- Maintaining the standard. The overriding goal is that an A this year represents the same achievement as an A last year. Moving the boundaries is how Cambridge absorbs difficulty changes without letting the grade's meaning drift.
So a lower boundary is not a gift and a higher one is not a punishment — each is simply the system compensating for how the paper played out. This is why last year's boundary is only a guide, never a guarantee, for this year.
Component boundaries versus the overall grade
Cambridge publishes thresholds at two levels. Component thresholds apply to each individual paper — for example the marks needed to reach each grade on Paper 21. Overall thresholds apply to the whole qualification once every component has been weighted and combined. Your final A-Level grade comes from the overall total against the overall thresholds, but the component figures are useful for diagnosing where you gained or lost ground. When results are released
Boundaries are published alongside results, so timing matters if you are waiting to check them:

How to read a threshold table: a worked example
Imagine the published overall thresholds for a subject in one session look like this, on a 200-mark scale:

Read it from the bottom up. Any total of 80 or more clears the E boundary and passes. A total of 145 clears the B boundary (140) but falls short of the A boundary (160), so it is a B — and it is 15 marks shy of that A. A total of 182 clears the A* line. Notice the bands here are 20 marks wide, so on a four-paper subject that is only about five marks per paper between one grade and the next: small, recoverable margins. (Remember, too, that the A* also checks your A2 component performance, not just the overall total.)
